Urban Outfitters warms hipster hearts with Late Fall Catalog

Not much about me says “hipster,” except my appreciation of Indie music and businesses. Also, I’ve been known to shamelessly peruse this site: Hel Looks (I mean, those outfits are fascinating–I want to interview all the people in those photos).

When I finally got around to thumbing through the Urban Outfitters Late Fall Catalog I was struck by the wear-ability of some of the extreme hipster-ish looks. Does that make sense? What I mean is, I looked at the clothes, clearly intended for model-thin blonds with a penchant for bustiers and Hammer pants, and thought, hey, I could wear that! (Nothing at all against you blondies out there!)

I usually love UO, so maybe this is no surprise to you. I guess I surprised myself by appreciating these looks.

Love the peach maxi-dress and kimono jacket on the left, plus the scarf and wedges on the right. Also, a rad letter jacket and little black dress. Sigh.

Bag, sweater, shades.

And, just so you’re aware, I want this bedroom…the whole thing.

Think I could get the Big Guy to wear that t-shirt? Yeah, you’re right…

Guess what. It’s somebody’s birthday tomorrow.

That’s the little guy. I can hardly believe how grown up he is. Pretty soon I’ll have to start referring to him as the medium-sized guy. Excuse my mom gushing for a moment but I am just so proud of him. He has become a boy of fine tastes (Bey Blades, ninja throwing stars, books, and camping included), a boy of intelligence, kindness, and easy temperament. He can be kind of moody like his mother, but he always comes back to home base, which is a place of happiness, energy, and a willingness to learn and be a part of whatever doins’ are going on around him.

On to the design portion of this post. In honor of the little/medium-sized birthday boy, I’m celebrating his favorite color on Gypsy Mind today.

I never get tired of investigating peoples’ collections. They’re so varied and close to the heart of each person. I’m especially interested if they’re, well, weird.

I mentioned recently that I inherited my grandmother’s china cabinet after she moved in with my mother this weekend. And I’m already having fun deciding what to display in it–for now, some of Grandma’s wedding crystal and a few odds and ends that found their way from her house to mine. I know the cabinet will soon become a trove of personal treasures.

Oh, I do love a nice fern. Happy Friday! I never get tired of saying that. Especially lately when it seems my weekends are filled with fun surprises. This weekend my grandma is moving and I’ll be on scene to help. I’m also inheriting her beloved china cabinet in the process.

This isn’t just any china cabinet – it’s a family heirloom and a piece of my childhood. Grandma and Grandpa’s house was one of my favorite places when I was little – it was a second home, and thanks to Grandma’s penchant for collecting, it was full of treasures. Opening the drawers of the dining room buffet would reveal piles of vintage buttons, 1940s costume jewelry, bits of fabric and linens – stuff a little Shannon loved.

In fact, her home probably sparked my interest in all things vintage. So, in tribute to her and the big move this weekend, this Friday Finds is dedicated to 1940s vintage and retro treasures. I stuck to a sort of everyday glamor. That’s how I like my vintage – made for the every-woman/every-man, but with a little sparkle.
