I love old movies. By old I mean classics, from the 1930s to the 70s. I can remember staying home sick from school as a kid and watching AMC all day as I dozed in and out of sleep. I coughed and hacked and gargled saltwater through Carmen Miranda numbers and pulpy thrillers. When I got older, my mom and I would glue ourselves to the couch for the annual showing of Gone With the Wind on TNT. And now the big guy and I share a love of Hitchcock and film noir.

Thought I’d share a little inspiration from the movie mavens I love.

I don’t usually go in for animal print, but I love it in small doses. Especially splashes of it in a really cushy, upscale look.

Like this. Love the purple.

And a little zebra.

And if you like the prints but not the traditional colors, no problem.

And in yellow and pink.

A mix and match approach.

If you happen to live in a town where there aren’t a lot of vintage/upcycle/antique/thrift shops, well, first, I don’t believe you. (Even the smallest towns have secondhand shops, garage sales, and at least some roadsides, amiright??) And second, etsy is a great go-to resource for vintage finds. Inspired by a recent visit, I put together a few ideas for you.

Oh, and etsy has a great blog series called Get the Look Decor, just made for people like you and me. It’s rife with ideas.

I have been badly bitten by the travel bug, people. Badly. I think every other phrase out of my mouth is, ooooh, I want to go there, I want to see that! Well, it’s every other thought in my head at least.

The mini-trip to Shedd Aquarium last week was only the beginning of my summer escapades, thank goodness. I’m currently planning a trip with a friend (this is a fun game called Pick a City and Go There) and our family vacation is coming up. Plus, I’ll probably take the train to Chicago a few more times just because I can.

Meanwhile, I’m dreaming of possible getaways, new sights, sounds, and people.

How about a cottage in Southern France? Um, ok.

There’s always camping in Fiji.

Or a more Cosmopolitan experience in Hong Kong.

The 10 cent designer just blogged here about renting a teepee in southern Saskatchewan.

Might I also recommend cruising the Mediterranean in jaw-dropping luxury?

You could just skip down to the Ozarks (Arkansas) and check out the Beckham Creek Cave Lodge.

If you’re feeling especially brave, there’s The Old Mount Gambier Goal in south Australia.

I think it’s kinda’ cozy for a prison.

Which would you choose? I wouldn’t mind a stay in all of them, you know, just to test them all out and see which I like best.

Last Friday I went somewhere really inspiring with the little guy, my mom, and my sister–the gorgeous Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. We loved the Jellies exhibit, the teeny tiny seahorses, and of course, the beluga whale show. I love the aquatic shows because the background of the huge tank is a beautiful view of the lake shore.

I bet you can guess where this is going.

This feature is quickly becoming a list of places I intend to visit but haven’t…yet. (!!) My understanding of Santa Fe style, though, is that it’s a blend of Southwestern influences–Native American, traditional Mexican, Spanish mission, and straight up cowboy. Would those of you who’ve been (or live there) agree?

Beautiful art is just one of my favorite things to come out of that corner of the world. I know the New Mexico landscape lends itself well to studies of light and form. So I included a round-up of Santa Fe art/artists in this one.

English Country Love

It’s no secret – I want to live in the English countryside. I would love to live in one of those ginormous estate homes (like the one in this movie), but I would love a little cottage on a hillside just as much.
